I shared earlier this year that God graciously blessed me with a contract from Kyujang Publishing, in Seoul Korea, to publish my entire book series . . . THE WAYS of GOD and WAITING on GOD was just released! A half page ad was run in the newspaper there and my collection of books is being called the “Touching Book Series.” I have been told they are receiving an overwhelming positive response! Praise God! I am still in awe and pray that the people of Korea will be encouraged and strengthened in their faith through these books! Thank you for joining me in prayer for those in Korea!

If you’re interested in self publishing, you’ll want to read what I’ve learned!
Self Publishing Success Q&A with Cherie Hill by Carlos Cooper
I met Cherie in an indie author LinkedIn group (HINT: if you’re looking to connect with like-minded authors, get on LinkedIn). Her passion and expertise immediately jumped out at me. She’s a perfect example of what to do with self-publishing and how to do it the right way. Cherie not only followed her passion and helped other in the process, but she’s also sold books. Who woulda thunkit? Without further rambling, here’s the interview!
Q: How did you become a writer?
To be honest, I never thought of being a writer until I began my ministry ScriptureNow.com. Through that ministry I began to see the needs of people all over the world, and I realized their walk of faith was really no different than my own. So as I began to walk with God, I began to write what He laid on my heart. Now, these were more lessons and teachings for me than anyone else, but I began to realize that His Words to me would also reach into the lives of others. I have probably read my own books more times than anyone else I know! So, as I walked out my faith in life, I just kept writing, and here I am eight books later as a bestselling Amazon author for Religion and Spirituality! (I initially thought writing ONE book would be a miracle!)
Q: What advice do you have for writers just starting out?
If you have a passion to write, write. I believe that we are each gifted with a story of some kind. Everyone has a book in them. And I’d encourage writers not to focus so much on the success of the book, but allowing a transformation of soul to take place as you accomplish something you’re passionate about. I would urge writers to not focus so much on the mechanics (hire an editor), but on the message. If you pour out your heart, the reader will know it and that’s what reaches people more than your sentence style (that’s not what my grammar teacher would like me to say :O).
Q: What advice do you have for experienced authors who are just now thinking about self-publishing?
DO IT! I am a full fledged fan of Amazon publishing services, either in paperback (CreateSpace) or ebook (Kindle Direct Publishing). Amazon has provided a powerful avenue for authors to get their books across the world. As the largest bookseller in the world, there is no better platform. That being said, getting noticed can be difficult if you don’t already have a following. So, I alway recommend new authors use the KDP Select program which allows you to market your book for free for up to 5 days every 90 days (note: your ebook must be exclusively published on Amazon.) Doing this does many things, it usually results in reviews, places your book on the TOP 100 FREE for your category (right next to the BESTSELLER list in that category), making your book highly visible, and boosts overall rankings in both Amazon and the Kindle Lending Library (which you also get paid on, the library is for Amazon Prime members). I have achieved all of my publishing success through using KDP Select. I give away nearly 15,000 ebook downloads every year and sell over double that. There are A LOT of fish (readers) in the sea; so if you’re a new author, this is the best avenue to get your work out there . . . to start a buzz. I would also mention that I find the program has a much better long term effect if you have multiple books. When a reader likes what you’ve written, they want to know what else you’ve written, if there’s nothing there to buy, they go on to the next author and book and forget about you. AND TIMING is everything. I’ve had a book sit for months and then “pop” after nothing I had done. So, it can be unpredictable and confusing sometimes, you just have to keep going. And keep writing! The miracle is usually what happens within you as you accomplish what you are purposed to do. Sales should not be the factor your success is hinged on.
Q: What do you think about the rise of self-publishing?
It’s TRULY a revolution. I could not be more excited for authors all over the world. I cringe when I think of all the BRILLIANT, powerful writings that were TRASHED because an agent or publisher decided the material wasn’t “marketable.” Especially in my genre, Christian Living, it is heart breaking to think of what we’ve missed. As I receive countless emails and reviews, reading how my writings have so dramatically changed lives, kept people from committing suicide etc., I am humbled and in awe at how history in the making might have been different if Amazon would not have provided this amazing opportunity to reach the world with hope. If you have a voice, it should be heard.
Q: What is the most important thing an author can do to help their books sell?
No matter what anyone says, the cover is everything. It doesn’t matter if you’ve written a New York Times Bestseller, if you don’t have an eye catching cover (as a thumbnail) you’re probably dead in the water. So this is CRITICAL. Secondly, title and subtitle. Don’t get too attached to an idea. Get with a marketing expert or someone who reads A LOT and have them brainstorm for you. I’ve worked with authors that “think” they have the title nailed down, but clearly it is not going to sell. Unfortunately, I’ve not been wrong on this issue once. Also, your first 20 pages or so are VITAL. With Amazon’s “Look Inside” feature, if you don’t grab the reader’s attention in the first few pages, you’re out of luck. This feature can work for you or against you. I’ve had readers say they read my first paragraph and didn’t read further, but bought the book immediately. So, throw your heart and soul into the first Chapter, you MUST get this right. Lastly, connect through social media, keep writing, look for places to post articles, blog posts, etc. Just keep going. You’re a writer, so write! : )
Q: Any parting thoughts?

CHERIE’S BIO: AMAZON AUTHOR PAGE
I’m just a sinner, saved by God’s AMAZING grace, with one desire: for my life to be poured out as a servant to Christ, in order to bring glory to God. God has given me the great joy of spreading His Word around the world through ScriptureNow.com And even though I have a BA in Psychology and I’m trained in Biblical Counseling through the AACC . . . it is truly God who has qualified me, through my daily surrender, as I walk intimately with Him one day at a time.
In the most amazing journey of my life, God has seen fit to make me an International Bestselling Christian Living author. More miraculously, I’ve been ranked #6 in Bestselling authors for Amazon in the Religion and Spirituality category. Truly, God still does miracles. (It’s ONLY by the grace of God that I am who I am. 1 Corinthians 15:10) My published works are:”Waiting on God,” “Be Still: Let Jesus Calm Your Storms,” “Beginning at The End: Finding God When Your World Falls Apart, “The Ways of God: Finding Purpose Through Your Pain,” “Hope Being Gone,” “empty. (Living Full of Faith When Life Drains You Dry),” and my latest releases: “FAITH Under Construction” and “From the Heart of GOD”. Get them HERE
